Minister urges fresh effort to find 'lost plutonium'

After the Indo-China War in 1964, when China conducted a nuclear test, the American CIA and India's intelligence agency IB together planned to install a nuclear device named Guru Rimponchi. Its main purpose was to curb China's nuclear ambitions, but due to the untimely avalanche, the device - made of plutonium was left in the middle before it was installed.

Dehradun:Following the glacial burst in the state and the subsequent loss of life, once again people's attention has gone towards the lost 56 kg plutonium believed to be buried in the Nand Devi peaks somewhere.

Talking about the issue, Uttarakhand cabinet minister Satpal Maharaj said that a few years ago Prime Minister Narendra Modi was informed about this plutonium and at the time, he had agreed to find it. Therefore, work will be started on this soon, the minister believes.

Reportedly, the state government has instructed scientists to find the lost plutonium in the Himalayan regions.

The missing radioactive plutonium on the peak of Nanda Devi in the year 1965 has not yet been detected. However, many teams have been deployed from time to time to find it. The mystery around the lost plutonium is still there.

Due to the plutonium present in the glacier of Nanda Devi, there is also a danger of radiation. Therefore, to avert any future danger, tourism minister Satpal Maharaj had informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi about it a few years ago.

He also urged the PM to start an initiative to find the lost plutonium.
