Roorkee (Uttarakhand): IIT Roorkee scientists have developed a portable ventilator which can be useful for patients infected with the coronavirus. The ventilator can be used by the patients at a time when there is a severe shortage of ventilators and other medical equipment.

Named as ‘Praan Vayu’, this closed-loop state of the art ventilator has been developed in collaboration with the AIIMS, Rishikesh.

What is ventilator

The ventilator is based on a controlled operation which supplies the required volume of air to the patient. The pressure and flow of air are regulated automatically to synchronize with the breathing of the patient. The ventilator can also control the tidal volume and breathing rate per minute.

The ventilator can overcome obstruction in the windpipe of the patient and can be used for patients of all age groups and is especially effective for senior citizens.

The speciality of portable ventilator

The prototype of the ventilator has been successfully tested on normal as well as patients suffering from breathing problems. The ventilator is not dependent on compressed air.

The ventilator can be very useful when a general ward or open space of a hospital has to be converted into an ICU. It is safe and reliable because it is equipped with real-time spirometry and alarm.

The work on the research and development of the ventilator was started during the lockdown period. This is why the facilities of IIT Roorkee’s ‘Tinkering’ laboratory were used to develop many parts like microprocessor-controlled non-return valve, solenoid valve and one-way valve. “The ventilator ‘Praan Vayu’ has been specially designed for meeting the challenge of COVID-19 pandemic.

This is a low cost, safe and reliable model which can be manufactured in very short time. The research and development team included IIT Roorkee’s Prof Akshay Dwivedi and Prof Aroop Kumar Das while AIIMS Rishikesh’s Dr Devendra Tripathi collaborated with them online.

IIT Roorkee has also developed low-cost face shields for first-line healthcare professionals at AIIMS Rishikesh for protection from COVID-19. The frame of the face shield is 3D printed. The shield can be used along with the protective gear by healthcare personnel while entering the wards housing COVID-19 patients.

The spectacle-type design of the protection shield provides the ease of replacement as the transparent sheet is not bound to a reusable frame.

The cost of the sheet is as low as INR 5. The manufacturing cost per shield is approximately INR 45. Mass manufacturing cost will be less than Rs 25. IIT Roorkee will be sending the first batch of 100 face shields to AIIMS, Rishikesh.
