Dehradun:The nation will celebrate the 20th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas on 26th July 2019. On this day in 1999, the over two-month-long war ended after Indian troops recaptured the positions that were intruded upon by Pakistani soldiers.

Martyr Jaideep Singh Bhandari's brother in talks with ETV Bharat

20 years after the war, the family of Martyr Jaideep Singh Bhandari, residing in Dehradun's Nehru Gram conjures up their memories about the soldier who fought till his last breath for his country.

In an interview with ETV Bharat, the brothers of Martyr Jaideep said that he wanted to be a part of the Indian Army since childhood. He joined the 17 Garhwal Rifles as soon as he passed class twelve before even turning eighteen.

His younger brother, Jasveer said that "only he knew Jaideep was going to Kargil for the war and no one else in the family".

He also told Jasveer to keep this a secret from their family. However, a few days later, he got the news of his brother's martyrdom, which was a big shock for his entire family. His family has not been able to recover from this shock.

47 soldiers of the Garhwal Rifles were martyred in the Kargil war, out of which 41 were from Uttarakhand, while 16 soldiers from the Kumaon Regiment had sacrificed their lives.

For their valiant efforts in the military warfare at Kargil conflict, 37 gallantry awards were bestowed to heroes of the state.
