Corpses found in Ganga for second day in a row

Several bodies were found floating in the Ganga river in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia on Tuesday, a day after a similar incident was reported in Bihar's Buxar district.

Ballia (UP): A day after bodies of suspected COVID patients washed up on the banks of Ganga in Bihar's Buxar and Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur, some unidentified corpses were found floating in the Ballia district on Tuesday.

According to reports, bodies were recovered from the banks of Ganga near Suhav block under the limits of Narhi police station.

The local people, traumatised by the sight of floating human bodies in the Ganga, fear the spread of disease in the area, which has not been spared by the ravaging COVID pandemic.

Meanwhile, Speaking to ETV Bharat, the Circle Officer of Simri in Buxar, said that these bodies have been found in Ballia, not in Buxar. The district magistrate of Ballia has been informed about this and further action will be taken after his instructions.

On Monday, over 100 decomposed bodies washed up on the banks of Ganga in Buxar, spreading panic among locals about a Covid spike in the area. Dozens of bodies were seen floating in the river at Chausa town, located near the Bihar-Uttar Pradesh border.

The incident of floating and piling up of corpses in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh sparked fears about the scale of the COVID crisis in the country. Authorities believe the relatives of those who succumbed to the virus, may not have been able to find space for the last rites.
