Chamoli disaster: Second day of rescue operation

According to DGP Ashok Kumar, most of the missing people are from UP and Bihar. They were all working on the dam project. The DGP said 30 persons from Lakhimpur Khiri have been contacted. A joint team of ITBP, army, SDRF and NDRF is engaged to rescue people trapped inside the tunnel.

Dehradun:Rescue operation is on in the flash flood ravage Joshimath of Chamoli district. The second day’s rescue operation in Raini and Tapovan began in the wee hours at 4 in the morning of Monday. It is reported that even now 50 people are trapped in the Tapovan tunnel. So far, 12 persons have been rescued from the small tunnel while the work for the opening of the big tunnel is continuing. As many as 19 bodies have been extracted so far while over 200 people are still missing.

According to DGP Ashok Kumar, most of the missing people are from UP and Bihar. They were all working on the dam project. The DGP said 30 persons from Lakhimpur Khiri have been contacted. A joint team of ITBP, army, SDRF and NDRF is engaged to rescue people trapped inside the tunnel.

Meanwhile, chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat reached the disaster-affected area. He was there to supervise the rescue operation. He will remain there through the night. The chief minister said the rescue and relief works were being carried out speedily and the government will not allow any laxity. The central government too was extending full help.

The Rishi Ganga power project was completely destroyed after a glacier collapsed at Raini village of Niti valley, 22 km from Joshimath. There has been huge damage due to the strong current of water in Chamoli. Bridge, houses and power plant have been badly damaged. Some bridges have collapsed due to flash flood in Rishi Ganga river. Communication with about 2000 residents of 13 villages has been lost. Relief material is being sent to them by helicopter. Because of the destruction of the Rishi Ganga power project, the power project of NTPC at Mili and Tapovan, near Raini village too has suffered heavily. The rescue operation is continuing for several labourers feared to be trapped in the tunnel there.
