Kanpur: A Muslim woman from Kanpur was given triple talaq when she demanded money from her husband to pay house rent and buy milk for their child.

Shabana Begum, married to Afsar Ahmed of Prayagraj said they got married in 2005 and since then he used to physically abuse her, never gave money for house needs and often leave for his hometown.

Tired of all this, she had in 2014 filed a complaint against him.

Following the complaint, he talked things out with Shabana and promised to live with her in a rented house.

However, after a few months, he again left for Prayagraj. On November 4, 2020, Shabana called Afsar and demanded money for food and rent, angered by which he gave her triple talaq on phone.

Shabana after that tried to register a police complaint but in vain. As her last option, she called the Chief Minister's portal and complained there. After that, the matter came to the notice of senior officials of the city a formal complaint was registered on 27 January.

The police said an investigation is on in the matter and soon the culprit would be arrested.

On August 1, 2019, after President Ram Nath Kovind assented to the Muslim Woman Bill (Protection of rights on marriage) instant triple talaq was criminalised attracting a jail term of three years for the offenders.
