Covid-19: UP reports first case of Kappa variant, patient dies

An elderly man reportedly died of Kappa strain of Covid-19 in Uttar Pradesh's Sant Kabir Nagar district. This is the first case of the Kappa variant reported from the state.

Sant Kabir Nagar: A 65-year-old man reportedly died of Covid-19 in Uttar Pradesh's Sant Kabir Nagar district. He was tested positive for the Kappa strain of Covid-19. According to sources, the deceased was a resident of Mehdawal in the Sant Kabir district. He was tested positive for Covid-19 on May 27 and admitted to the BRD Medical College on June 12. His sample was collected on June 13 as a routine and sent to CSIR's Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, New Delhi which confirmed the Kappa strain in the sample.

Anurag Singh, the deceased's son, said that after testing positive on May 27, his father was treated at a local private clinic for around two weeks and later shifted to the BRD Medical College where he died.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Indra Vijay Vishwakarma said that he learnt through the media that the deceased was infected with the Kappa variant of Covid-19. "We will act accordingly as and when we get instructions from the senior officials," he added.
