Two held with gold bars worth Rs 1.2 crore in UP

Two gold smugglers were arrested from Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly trying to smuggle gold bars worth about Rs 1.2 crore in North East Express train.

Chandauli (UP):Two Kanpur bound passengers have been apprehended by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) at Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly trying to smuggle gold bars worth about Rs 1.2 crore in North East Express train on Saturday late night.

According to sources, three kg gold was recovered from an AC coach of North East Express train and two smugglers were arrested in this connection. The gold bars were being taken from Kamakhya to Kanpur.

The accused persons have been identified as Abdul Salam of Hugli in West Bengal and Azizul Rehman of Kanpur.

Acting on a tip-off, a DRI team led by the senior official, Anand Kumar Ray raided at Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction and nabbed the smugglers.

On being interrogated, the accused persons told that these gold are brought from Myanmar to the states of North East. Then smuggling was getting done from there to other parts of the country. The DRI team seized the gold under the Customs Act and sent both the smugglers to jail, sources added.
