Varanasi: After realising that two wheelers account for 25% of total road crash deaths in India, students of Varanasi developed a 'Smart Safety Helmet' which prompts the rider to wear helmet and until the rider has strapped on, the bike won't start.

As India records four deaths every hour in road accident because of not wearing helmet, B.Tech students of a college in Varanasi innovated the helmet to prevent such cases in future.

Talking about the invention, a B.Tech student Aneesh Kumar Patel said," The helmet is designed in such a way that the bike won't start until the rider wears a helmet. A transmitter has been fixed at the engine and a receiver is attached at the helmet. The receiver and transmitter are connected via bluetooth. The vehicle doesn't starts until the sensor detects the rider is wearing a helmet."

Considering how increasing, two-wheeler riders are becoming the victims of accident, Patel said," The device will help prevent road accidents as it mandates wearing a helmet while riding a two-wheeler. The price of the helmet is fixed at Rs 500."

Apart from ensuring safety of the rider, the helmet also guarantees the security of the vehicle and it also has an additional vibration sensor that can detect the accident impact and send emergency messages to contacts through GSM and GPS modules.

"Helmet is very necessary to ensure safety. I hail the efforts the students who have developed the device," Shravan Singh, SP (traffic) said.

Several measures initiated by the government to ensure safety of the rider have failed miserably and people conveniently choose not to wear helmets. This technique might help when it comes to averting deaths in road accident that primarily occur due to not wearing helmet.
