This good samaritan helps people get over alcoholism

Bhanumati, a forest dweller campaigned against alcohol consumption, illicit liquor production and forced labour in the nearby localities. Her contribution was appreciated by our former President Dr Pranab Mukherjee and was awarded recently at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Bahraich:Teria village, which is around 120 km away from the district headquarters, remained distant from development and government schemes for long.

Most of the forest dwellers were subjected to harassments of all sorts. They were not getting quota's rations and were forced to work without pay.

However, a change was initiated by one of the female forest dweller, Bhanumati, who used to work in the forest during day time and slept drunk at night.

Bhanumati started changing her ways when she came across a volunteer organization which highlighted the adverse effects of alcohol and its impact on the body, besides helping people get rid of its habit.

Bhanumati gathered all the female from the nearby localities and started campaigning against alcohol consumption, illicit liquor production and forced labour. She also worked to promote women empowerment and girl children's education and safety.

The contribution made by Bhanumati has been appreciated by our former President Dr Pranab Mukherjee. Among many vigorous women in India, Bhanumati has been awarded recently at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Teria has come to the spotlight because of Bhanumati's firm willpower and persistence and is being developed as a model village now.

Student volunteers from across the world are also visiting this village plunged in greenery and running awareness crusades for the villagers.
