SP to honour woman who saved 25 lives in Uttarakhand disaster

The Samajwadi Party will honour Mangshri Devi who saved the lives of 25 people, including her son in flash floods in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district.

Lucknow:The Samajwadi Party will honour Mangshri Devi who saved the lives of 25 people, including her son in flash floods in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav said on Saturday.

"The Samajwadi Party will felicitate Uttarakhand’s conscious mother who saved not only her son’s life but also 25 more people in the Uttarakhand glacier burst tragedy. And our party will honour this mother by paying five lakh rupees," Yadav tweeted.

He also demanded the Uttar Pradesh government to provide ex-gratia of Rs 20 lakh to the families of the state whose family members are still missing.

The woman's frantic phone calls to her son helped save the lives of as many as 25 people amid the Uttarakhand glacier burst. She continuously called her son after she saw the Dhauliganga river raging towards him and wanted to warn him against the tragedy.

In the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, the death toll in the glacier breakdown disaster has crossed 60. Disaster relief work is still underway.
