Saharanpur hooch tragedy: Death toll reaches 58

Saharanpur: As many as 58 people have died after consuming spurious liquor in Nagal Thana area here till Saturday afternoon, while many fell ill and were taken to the hospital.

On Friday, five people died and several people fell ill after consuming the illicit liquor.

Many patients are said to be serious and have been referred to Saharanpur medical college and higher medical facility.

Meanwhile, the incident has also put the excise department under scanner. Senior Superintendent of Police has suspended six officials over the matter.

UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh to the family members of the deceased and ₹50,000 to those undergoing treatment.
