New Delhi: A Public Interest Litigation(PIL) has been filed in the Supreme court seeking imposition of Article 356 in Uttar Pradesh in view of the recent developments after Hathras gangrape case.

The petition has been filed by Advocate CR Jaya Sukin who contends that "unlawful and arbitrary killings, including extrajudicial killings perpetrated by police, torture by prison officials, arbitrary arrest and detention by government authorities, restrictions on freedom of expression and the press, unjustified arrests or prosecutions against journalists, crimes against all women and Dalits have risen to an unprecedented level which accentuates that Government of the Uttar Pradesh can't maintain law and order in accordance with the provisions of the constitution".

The petitioner further added that Uttar Pradesh ranks as the most unsafe state and has violated Article 21 of the constitution without following the basic principles of justice.

The advocate says that imposition of Article 356 is necessary to save the democracy and lives of 20 crore people.
