Jalaun: A constable of the Uttar Pradesh Police was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Jalaun district of the state on Tuesday night, officials said. Police have launched a manhunt to nab the attackers. The deceased has been identified as Constable Bhedjit Singh. An official said that the incident took place near the police post located on the National Highway of Orai Kotwali area.

Constable Bhedjit Singh was posted on patrolling duty at the police post on Tuesday night. The watchman of Govindaram Dhaba located in the vicinity of the police post was also standing at some distance. A police official said that while the constable was doing his duty, at around 2 o'clock in the night, a suspicious motorcycle approached towards the checkpost.
When constable Bhedjit Singh asked the bike rider to stop, the rider sped the bike and tried to flee. Smelling foul, the constable chased the motorcylist to nab him. However, after chasing him for a distance, the motorcylist opened fire at the constable and fled from the spot leaving the cop dead on the spot, an official said.
Confirming the constable's killing, Superintendent of Police Dr. Eraj Raja said that the assailants are believed to be more than one. Soon after the incident, a team of police led by SP Raja rushed to the spot and launched a search operation in the area. SP Raja has formed four teams to nab the assailants even as several checkposts have also been installed to prevent the assailants escape from the area.
