Modinagar people protest against no action on monkey menace

People in Modinagar of Uttar Pradesh are troubled due to growing population of monkeys in the city as they attack them even in their homes. People, including women, organised a day-long protest demanding authorities concerned to initiate action to deal with the problem, which has made their lives difficult.

Modinagar: Monkey menace in the city has forced people to hold a sit-in protest even as none from the authorities concerned took any initiative to handle the problem.

People participating in a day-long symbolic protest told ETV Bharat that no official took any action on their complaint even after repeated reminders.

"We are sitting here to protest against the attitude of the officials concerned. They should listen to us and do something about it," said Kusum Soni of Laxmibai Foundation.

She said monkeys have become very dangerous for everyone in the city and no one is paying attention to their plight.

"Women and children cannot go out. There are many cases of people being bitten by monkeys," she said, adding that Modinagar must be made free of the menace as soon as possible.

Ruchika Bindra of Urja Foundation also expressed the same sentiments, saying children and elderly are not safe even at their homes.

"We cannot send children on the terrace alone. We can't even put our clothes out to dry," she said.

An elderly woman, who has been attacked many times by monkeys, was also a part of the protest.

She said that she was already bitten by monkeys thrice in the recent past and wanted the officials concerned to take immediate action.
