Mathura: Undertrial commits suicide in jail

An undertrial prisoner who was lodged in a makeshift jail on April 24 in Mathura, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in the bathroom of the jail on Sunday.

Mathura:An undertrial prisoner allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in the bathroom of a makeshift jail here on Sunday, police said.

"Undertrial Virendra alias Veeru (28) of Chhata town committed suicide in the bathroom of the temporary jail today," Deputy Superintendent of Police Varun Kumar said.

The body has been sent for post-mortem, he said.

Kumar said Virendra was lodged in the makeshift jail on April 24 after he was arrested following a clash between two groups.

The administration has been lodging undertrials in makeshift jails in the wake of the COVID-19 situation, officials said.
