UP bride calls off wedding after drunk groom smears vermillion on entire face

The bride said that she would not marry the youth after which, the groom and his father were held up by the bride's family.

Chandauli (Uttar Pradesh): A bride called off her wedding after her groom, in an inebriated condition, smeared vermillion on her entire face instead of her forehead. When prevented, the groom even hit her. The groom and his father were held up by the bride's family for the act. The matter was finally resolved following police intervention.

The incident took place in Mirzapur district under Chakarghatta police station area on Thursday. The marriage procession came from Manikpur village of Ahiraura police station to Mirzapur amid great pomp and show. The groom's family was extended a warm welcome by the bride's family and then served dinner.

After which, the marriage rituals were started. The priest asked the groom to come to the mandap first and the bride followed after sometime. It was learnt that the groom had arrived at the venue in an inebriated condition but was participating in all the rituals. Trouble arose when the groom was asked to smear vermillion on the bride's forehead. The groom, in drunken state, smeared the vermillion on the bride's entire face and even hit her when she tried to stop him.

Relatives tried to pacify the groom and handle the awkward situation. Embarrassed and angry, the bride got up and announced that she would not marry the groom. She then left the mandap and went inside the house. Baffled at the sudden turn of events, the guests who had accompanied the groom, fled from the venue. But, the bride's family caught hold of the groom and his father.

The Chakarghatta Police came after getting information about the dispute. Both the families of the groom and the bride were taken to the police station and several rounds of discussions were held. Finally, the marriage was called off and both the families agreed to repay the marriage expenses that were incurred till now. Station-in-charge Chakarghatta Rajesh Kumar said that the bride refused to marry the youth and both the parties reached an agreement on the basis of mutual negotiation.
