Bareilly (Uttar Pradesh): In a tragic accident, at least eight people, including a child, were charred to death after the vehicle they were travelling in caught fire after hitting an oncoming truck on Saturday night. The incident took place on Bareilly Nainital Highway at around 11 pm. Fire and emergency services rushed to the spot to douse the flames.

According to police, the driver of the SUV lost control of the vehicle after it suffered a tyre puncture. The vehicle jumped the barrier onto the other side of the road and was hit by the truck coming from the opposite direction. The collision was followed by a loud explosion as the two vehicles went up in flames. The deceased were returning to Behari after attending a wedding in Bareilly, the police added.

Special Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sushil Chandrabhan confirmed the death of eight people including the child. The SSP said, "The SUV belonged to Sumit Gupta who had given it to one Furkhan, a resident of Narayan Nagla under the Baheri police station area. The occupants of the vehicle were returning to Baheri from Bareilly after attending a wedding at Faham Lawn in the city."

The police have taken possession of the bodies and sent them for post-mortem examination. The victims are yet to be identified, SSP added.
