Lucknow:Senior Congress leader and former union minister Salman Khurshid arrived at his party leader Pramod Tiwar's house at Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg but both were put under house arrest as they were heading towards Lakhimpur to take stock of the situation.

Speaking to ETV Bharat Salman Khurshid said that it is their responsibility to visit the Lakhimpur where violence broke out during farmers protest on Sunday.

Khurshid stated that "our leader Priyanka Gandhi was stopped while going to Lakhimpur, which is a violation of the law. It is our responsibility to visit the spot of violence. I came here to accompany Pramod Tiwari. Both of us have been locked up at his home. I believe that democracy should not be locked up."

Adding further the leader said, "we want to visit the site and provide all kinds of support without breaking the law and order,"

Meanwhile, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and SP President Akhilesh Yadav lashed out at BJP led government in the state saying that there was no such dictatorship even during Hitler's rule.

Speaking to ETV Bharat Yadav said, "the son of BJP's Minister of State for Home had killed the farmers. There was no such dictatorship even during Hitler's rule. We demand a compensation of Rs 2 crore for the families of the deceased farmers,"

The leader also made serious allegations against the police stating that the police might have burnt the vehicles to spoil the farmers' image.

"It might be possible that police would have burnt the vehicles to dent the image of farmers. Nonetheless, culprits of the incident should be immediately arrested and put behind bars,"

On the other hand, in Uttarakhand, former Chief Minister Harish Rawat along with his followers was arrested by the police. The leader came to stage a protest at Dehradun SSP office against violence in UP's Lakhimpur Kheri.

While Congress leader Preetam Singh along with party workers burnt the effigy of BJP at Ashley Hall Chowk in a demonstration against violence in Lakhimpur.

Preetam said, "Congress condemns the Lakhimpur incident. Our warning to the government, if it continues to act like this, we will be forced to hit the streets and protest against it,"

BSP's national general secretary Satish Chandra Mishra has been under house arrest since Sunday night. His house was also fenced by the security guards.

In a conversation with ETV on Monday, Mishra said, "Our support to farmers is not only limited to the social media. Once we will be allowed to get out of home, we will stage a protest on the streets in favour of farmers."

Punjab Deputy CM Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and several other Congress MLAs who were heading to Lakhimpur were also detained by the Uttar Pradesh Police in Yamunanagar on Monday.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel while addressing the media in New Delhi demanded the suspension of the Minister of State for Home in the Lakhimpur clash and to register a murder case against his son. He also said that the BJP has inspired by the British government. He made the statement after his flight was not allowed to land in Lucknow.

Former Union Minister and Congress leader Sachin Pilot has demanded a judicial inquiry into the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case. During a presser in Delhi, the leader alleged that farmers are being attacked in BJP-ruling states.

The Pilot stated, "Why farmers in BJP ruling states have been attacked? Those who are involved in the incident should strictly be punished. UP government's behaviour with Priyanka Gandhi shows that the saffron party is scared. The UP police and the government have a habit of operating beyond the law of the land."

Earlier in the day, the Samajwadi Party chief and former CM Akhilesh Yadav was detained from visiting Lakhimpur Kheri, while the Punjab and Chhattisgarh CMs were not allowed to land at the Lucknow airport. A heavy police force was also deployed outside the SP leader's residence at Vikramaditya Marg ahead of his visit to the violence-hit district where 8 people including four farmers died in clashes yesterday.
