Lucknow:The Uttar Pradesh government Monday constituted a judicial commission to investigate the encounter of Atiq Ahmed's son Asad in the Umesh Pal murder case. The commission has Retired High Court Justice Rajiv Lochan Mehrotra and retired DGP VK Gupta as its members.

The commission has summoned those mentioned in the FIR registered in the case at Jhansi's Baragaon. A magisterial inquiry has been launched in the matter under Jhansi City Magistrate Ankur Srivastava.

The UP STF had killed Asad and another shooter, Ghulam at Jhansi on April 13. These two were among the five shooters who were absconding in the murder of Umesh Pal along with two police personnel in Prayagraj on February 24. On February 24, lawyer Umesh Pal along with his two gunners were killed by Asad in Prayagraj's Sulemsarai, as evident from CCTV footage.

The STF which was probing the incident received information about Asad and Ghulam's location near Jhansi while Atiq Ahmed was being brought from Sabarmati Jail to Prayagraj. The STF and UP police team laid siege on them on April 13 and killed Asad and Ghulam in an encounter.

According to the STF the duo who were killed fired on police personnel first following which the police shot them. However, the encounter was murked in controversies. This was because the statements mentioned in the FIR lodged by Deputy Superintendent of Police STF Navendu Kumar, who was leading the encounter did not tally with the photographs of the encounter spot.

The National Human Rights Commission has also registered a case on Asad's encounter and has started its investigation. On April 15, a judicial inquiry commission was also constituted in the case of the murder of Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf amid a media interaction by three shooters posing as journalists.
