Ghaziabad (Uttar Pradesh):With the nationwide lockdown enforced, farmers are having a tough time harvesting and selling their produce, with many even running into heavy losses.
ETV Bharat reached Ghaziabad's Rawli village to speak with affected farmers about the issues they were facing.
Naushad, a farmer who cultivates vegetables and flowers, said that they were receiving paltry sums for their produce.
For example, farmers are now selling cucumbers, which usually get Rs 20 per kilo, for only Rs 4-5 per kilo.
Naushad said many farmers were not even being able to break even, and those employing labourers had to spend out of their own pockets in order to pay for their wages. The situation was much worse for flowers, Naushad said.
With no weddings taking place and all places of worship shut due to the lockdown, there are absolutely no takers for flowers.
Many farmers have decided to till the land even with the standing crop, Naushad rued.
However, the farmer said they would have to display patience as the entire country was reeling under the existing circumstances.
