Kasganj (Uttar Pradesh): Former BSP MLA Hasrat Ullah Sherwani has been sent to jail by the Special Court in Kasganj district of Uttar Pradesh. The court heard the old case of assaulting a person in police custody after entering the police lockup. During the hearing, the court found the former BSP MLA guilty and sent him to jail on judicial custody.
On 30 May 2011, Shamim Ahmed, a resident of the Dholna Kotwali area of Kasganj, reached Dholna Police Station to file a case of molestation against a person named Shamshad. Here, the police were reluctant to register a case. Shamim Ahmed gave this information to Hasrat Ullah Sherwani, who was the BSP MLA at that time. However, later the police took a written complaint from Shamim Ahmed and brought Shamshad to the Dholna Police Station and locked him in the police station lockup. It was alleged that the Bahujan Samaj Party MLA, who is now with the Samajwadi Party, Hasrat Ullah Sherwani, had forcibly entered the police station with eight of his companions after getting to know about the police not filing a case against Shamshad. Later, they beat up Shamshad in the police lockup fiercely.
Shamshad was released from the police station only after a settlement was reached between the two sides. After being released from the police station, Shamshad complained to the Human Rights Commission about the severe beating by the MLA in the police lockup. Taking cognizance of the matter immediately, the Human Rights Commission had directed action against the MLA.
