Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh):The Elephant Mithu, who is serving punishment on the murder charges of a man, under the supervision of Ramnagar Wildlife in Chandauli for more than one and a half years may be released soon.
Earlier, on 20 October 2020, Mithu along with his Mahout went to the Ramleela Fair. According to media reports, some people started abusing Mithu while returning from the fair. An angry Mithu killed a person. A case of murder (Section 302 of IPC) was registered against the elephant and its mahout at Baburi police station. After the death of the person, the forest department seized the elephant.
Though the elephant was domesticated, but the elephant owners were accused of illegally confining an elephant in captivity. Though mahout was granted bail in this case, Mithu is serving a sentence to date.
