Lucknow: A man, wanted in several cases of theft and murder, carrying a reward of Rs.50,000 on his head was held after he got injured in an encounter with the police on Thursday morning.
The accused identified as Shibu was recently involved in an alleged case of theft and murder of a businessman near Ambedkar Nagar area.
"We received a tip-off about the accused coming to Charbagh area of the city, following which a team of police laid a trap and apprehended him," said a police official.
"The accused was intercepted by police near Charbagh area. He was signalled to stop for inquiry, but instead, he opened fire on the policemen and tried to flee," the officer added.
As per reports, the accused suffered injuries to his leg in retaliatory firing by the police. Later, he was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
This is the second such encounter by the city police amid COVID-19 lockdown. On April 25, two alleged criminals, who were wanted in a case of robbery at a house of a doctor were also arrested by police.
