ASI to replace damaged stones of Taj Mahal's Chameli floor

The damaged stones of the Chameli floor of Taj Mahal will be repaired and replaced by the Archeological Survey of India (ASI). A tender for the same has also been floated.

ASI to replace broken stones of Taj Mahal's Chameli floor

Agra (Uttar Pradesh):The Archeological Survey of India (ASI) is set to repair and replace the damaged stones of Chameli floor of Taj Mahal. The chameli floor is right below the main dome of the Taj and is made of Red Balui and White marble.

The floor has developed cracks and holes with time and during rains, these are filled with water thus causing damage to the monument as well as inconvenience to tourists.

The ASI has decided to change the stones around the main mausoleum which are ruined in between Mehmankhana and Shahi Masjid. A tender for the same has also been floated.

Vasant Kumar Swarnkar, ASI’s Superintendent Archeologist said, “With time, the Red Balui and White Marble of the Chameli Floor have been damaged. The damaged stones of the floor will be replaced so that tourists do not face difficulties. The tender has been floated and the estimated cost of the work will be around six lakh rupees.”
