AMU to start M Tech in Earthquake Engineering

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is set to start a new M Tech (Civil Engineering) with specialisation in 'Earthquake Engineering and Disaster Management'. The course will be introduced in order to produce trained personnel to handle the danger posed by earthquakes.

Aligarh: In a view to produce trained personnel to handle the danger posed by earthquakes after a series of tremors rocked the National Capital Territory, the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) will start a new M Tech (Civil Engineering) with specialisation in 'Earthquake Engineering and Disaster Management'.

The course will be introduced in the Department of Civil Engineering, Zakir Hussain College of Engineering and Technology.

"Twelve students from B Tech (Civil Engineering) will be selected to study earthquake engineering as a systematic study of the earth, and the consequences of any disturbance within it and its impact on human life, property and environment," said Prof Pervez Mustajab, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology.

Students will be selected on the basis of their performance in entrance test, added Prof Abdul Baqi, Chairman, Department of Civil Engineering.

He added that these M Tech passouts will plan, design, construct and manage earthquake resistant structures and facilities.

An earthquake engineering lab, two smart classrooms and two rooms for faculty members have also been allotted to the Department of Civil Engineering for the new course.
