CAA protest: Accused held over non-payment of compensation for damaging public property

Lucknow police arrested a man for not being able to compensate for the losses caused to the public property during the Anti-CAA protests in Lucknow in December 2019.

Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh): A man in Lucknow has been arrested for not being able to pay compensation for damaging public property during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests across the state held across the nation in December 2019.

A notice was issued to the accused earlier to make up for the damages done during the anti-CAA protests which amounted for Rs 21,760,00. The accused was, however, unable to pay the amount following which he was arrested by the police. He was arrested for not being able to compensate for the losses which will be the first arrest in this connection.

Sardar Tehsildar Shambhu Saran said that RC was issued against the accused Mohammad Kalim son Shamsuddin from the court of Additional District Magistrate (Trans Gomti ) Vishwa Bhushan Mishra.

Mohammad Kalim, a resident of Bhitouli Square Jankipuram was later arrested and sent to jail.

Pertinent to mention, on December 19, 2019, government property was severely damaged in protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act.

The administration after the protests issued orders against 57 accused to compensate the losses which amounted to Rs 1.55 crore on collective liability basis.

The property of four accused has been attached since June 30. Whose auction will be held on July 16.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had instructed the administration to seize the properties of the accused to compensate for the losses during the violent protests
