Assam Tourism changes strategy, to focus more on NE tourists

Director of the Assam Tourism Development Corporation, Deva Kumar Mishra said that they are planning to focus more on domestic tourists, especially tourists from the northeastern states in the days to come.

Assam tourism had suffered a loss of about Rs. 3000 crore in recent months. While the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests affected the sector at the beginning of the current tourist season, the lockdown due to spread of Coronavirus further affected the sector. The peak tourist season in Assam normally starts in October and continues up to May. the flow of the tourists, however, continues even after that.

"Considering the situation triggered by the lockdown, we are not expecting more tourists from foreign this season. Although we have substantial tourists visiting the state from states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi etc, we are not expecting much tourists from these states as well," Mishra said.

He said that the department is formulating some packages to attract people from the northeastern states, which are less affected by the COVID-19. The department had already held rounds of interactions with the tour operators so that more tourists from the northeastern states could be attracted," he said.

The department is planning to highlight the historical and religious places of the state including the heritage places, the lush green tea gardens and places like Jatinga, river Island Majuli whereas, other natures' wonders could also be on agenda to attract the domestic tourists, particularly those from the northeastern states.
