Vet murder: Student held for defaming victim on social media

The student, who had allegedly posted derogatory comments on social media platforms about the veterinarian raped and murdered near here last month, was arrested on Thursday. The 18-year-old had posted the comments on November 29th and after the post went viral, he deleted his Facebook account.

Hyderabad (Telangana):An 18-year-old student from Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh was on Thursday arrested for allegedly posting derogatory comments on social media platforms about the veterinarian who was raped and murdered near here last month, police said.

"The student had posted the comments on November 29th and after the post went viral, he deleted his Facebook account as he apprehended a police case," Rachakonda Police Commissioner Mahesh M Bhagwat said.

Reportedly, a case was registered on December 1st and during the investigation, he was arrested from Guntur.

Telangana police have already arrested three people from different parts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for allegedly posting abusive comments on different social media platforms.

The Commissioner strictly cautioned people not to resort to posting such objectionable comments and defaming any individuals and if they do, they will have to face severe consequences as per the law.

Protests against the gang rape and murder of the woman veterinary doctor continued in the city and other parts of Telangana on Monday with students, lawyers and others taking out rallies and holding demonstrations demanding death penalty for the four accused arrested in the case.

Raising slogans like "We want justice" and holding placards that read "Hang the rapists", the protesters condemned the incident.

Scores of students of different educational institutions under the aegis of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) took out a rally from Baghlingampally to Indira Park and demanded that the accused be hanged in public.

Advocates under the banner of Telangana Advocates Joint Action Committee (JAC) also held protests and staged candle-light vigil near the High Court here.

Protests were also held by school students and different student groups and others at various places in the state, demanding capital punishment for the accused.

Four men, all lorry workers, aged between 20 and 24, were arrested on November 29th on charges of raping and killing the woman and had been sent to judicial custody for 14 days on Saturday.
