Notice to Telangana govt over woman's custody death

New Delhi:The National Commission for Scheduled Castes or NCSC has sought a report from the government of Telangana on the death of a woman in police custody.

The Commission's chairman Vijay Sampla said the report should be presented within seven days.

Dalit woman Mariamma, a cook in a house was arrested along with her son Uday Kiran on the complaint of theft by her employer. She died in custody at Addagudur police station in Bhongir district. Reports said she was beaten and she had marks on her body.

The NCSC issued notice to the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police in Bhongir district and the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police in Telangana asking them to submit the facts and information on the action taken report.

Sampla cautioned the officers that if action taken report is not received within the stipulated time then the Commission would exercise the powers of the Civil courts conferred on it under Article 338 of the Constitution of India and they will be issued a summon for personal appearance before the Commission in Delhi. "As Chairman, I am duty-bound to secure the rights of Scheduled Castes and ensure that they get justice in all respects," Sampla said.
