Hyderabad: In what might seem like a scene straight out of the Bollywood blockbuster 'Dangal', a female wrestler pipped her male competitors to emerge victorious at a local wrestling tournament in Telangana's Nizamabad district.

Among the scores of grapplers taking part at a local wrestling tourney in Saloora village of Nizamabad's Bodhan Mandal, a young woman in a bright red kit stood out.

Trained by her father, Mahija Phalguni, an intermediate student from Maharashtra, took all of five minutes to pin down her male competitor in the final of the tournament to walk away with the prize money of Rs 5,000.

Speaking to media after her incredible feat, Mahija said that she was no mug at the sport, having participated at the National level on four previous occasions.

"I won the Silver Medal at the Khelo India School Games in Delhi last year. I want people to know that girls are no lesser than boys and are equal to them in every sense," she said.

Mahija, who has participated in over 200 wrestling tournaments so far, added that her sole aim was to take her game a notch higher and achieve laurels at the international level.
