Hyderabad: In a positive step towards ensuring a plastic-free Hyderabad, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is creating a green street vending zone.

All the vendors will receive FSSAI certification

The vending zone, which will come up near Shilparamam in the Hi-Tech city area, will have 55 stalls - entirely made of recycled material.

GHMC Zonal Commissioner Hari Chandana Dasari informed that the entire zone will be single-use-plastic-free.

A company based in Gujarat is making these stalls, using 40 tonnes of recycled plastic. Each stall requires around 2 thousand recycled bottles.

The GHMC is spending Rs 90,000 for each stall in the zone, which will be spread across 800 metres.

Dasari further informed that the vendors will receive intensive training for four months, where they will be taught food safety measures and learn ways to shun the use of plastic.

This will be the first time in India that street vendors will be FSSAI certified, as only restaurants received the certification till now, she added.

The GHMC aims to make the zone functional within the next 10-15 days, and hopes that this initiative helps in establishing Hyderabad as a truly sustainable city.
