Incessant rain claims three lives in Hyderabad

Several areas in Hyderabad received heavy showers on Saturday evening claiming the lives of three people. Dozens of colonies in Hyderabad and nearby areas remained inundated on Sunday even as authorities scrambled to pump out floodwaters from waterlogged areas and provide relief to rain-hit people.

Hyderabad: At least three people died of electrocution after Hyderabad witnessed the second bout of torrential rains on Sunday. The deaths have been reported from Malakpet, Arundhati Nagar and Uppal.

Several parts of Telangana, including the capital, were inundated and faced traffic snarls. Water-logging was also witnessed in Vanastalipuram, L.B Nagar,Uppal, Secunderabad, Punjagutta, Khairatabad, Kukatpalli, Hi-tech city, Mehadipatnam, Attapur, Aramgarh Chowrasta and Chandrayangutta. The normal life of the residents came to a halt and there was load shedding in several parts of the city.

According to official data (from 8.30 AM to 10 pm on Saturday), Singapur Township in Medchal Malkajgiri district received 157.3 mm of rainfall, followed by 153 mm of rain at Bandlaguda near Uppal in the city.

Hyderabad Commissioner of Police Anjani Kumar said evacuation is being carried out in low-lying areas.

Taking it to Twitter, he said, "Inundation of low lying colonies Hafiz baba Nagar, Phoolbagh, Omar Colony, Indra Nagar, Shivaji Nagar, Rajiv Nagar. Please cooperate with Police in evacuation exercise."

Several other areas in the city also witnessed heavy rain. The authorities of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) cleared the water in many low-lying areas and participated in the relief and rescue operations.

The Disaster Response Force (DRF) personnel of GHMC were continuously working on the field clearing water stagnations and inundations and all possible measures were being initiated in view of the rainfall, Vishwajit Kampati, Director, Vigilance and Disaster Management of GHMC, said in a tweet.

Hyderabad Horse Riding School team participated in the rescue operations by supplying milk, vegetables to the flooded areas on the horse.

Earlier on Saturday, the GHMC had issued advisory asking residents to stay indoors. "Most parts of the city are likely to witness moderate to heavy rainfall," the tweet said.

Light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely in parts of Hyderabad, The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its forecast.

The state government said on October 15 that 50 people had lost their lives due to heavy rains and flash floods and the state government had put the losses, as per preliminary estimates, at over Rs 5,000 crore.

The state government has been carrying out relief measures in the rain-affected areas, even as some localities, close to water bodies, remained in water.

The Met office in its forecast for Sunday said light to moderate rain or thundershowers is very likely to occur in some parts of the city, at times intense spells at one or two places in the city.

The IMD has also forecast heavy rainfall at isolated places in coastal AP and Yanam on Sunday and Rayalaseema on Monday and Tuesday. A cyclonic circulation lying over west central Bay of Bengal off AP coast, extending up to 5.8 km above the mean sea level has been identified.
