Hyderabad: A couple was arrested in Telangana's Jogulamba-Gadwal district for strangulating their daughter to death after coming to know that she was pregnant, police said on Monday.

According to the Shanthinagar Police, the deceased Divya (20), was pursuing graduation at a college in Kurnool district in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.

She had reportedly fell in love with a youth from another caste, and had returned home just two days before the lockdown was imposed.

Growing suspicious, Divya's parents took her to Kurnool for a medical test on Saturday, and when it came to light that she was pregnant, her parents wanted the girl to get an abortion, police said.

However, the girl was adamant on not getting an abortion and also expressed her desire to get married to her lover.

Divya's parents thought, her pregnancy and the fact that she fell in love with someone outside their caste, would bring disrepute to the family, and decided to murder her, police said.

Early on Sunday morning, Divya's parents smothered her with a pillow while she was sleeping, and strangulated her to death.

The following morning, the parents tried to pass off Divya's death as a natural one owing to sudden cardiac arrest.

However, later during the course of the interrogation, the parents admitted to their crime and said they resorted to the extreme measure as they were worried about the impact of the development on their other two daughters.

Meanwhile, the police have filed a case and the accused have been sent to judicial remand.
