Heavy showers put normal life out of gear in Telangana

Heavy rainfall in Telangana and massive inflows from upper riparian states into the Godavari river disrupted normal life in the state. Floodwaters seeped into the houses and many vehicles were submerged or washed away. The situation has forced people to remain trapped in their homes for hours.

Hyderabad: Torrential rains across Telangana have played havoc while throwing normal life out of gear. Several parts of the state are reeling under flood-like situations and most of the residential areas are facing water-logging and inundation. The overflowing water from manholes and drains has started entering houses with appliances and vehicles submerging into knee-deep floodwater. The movement of traffic has also been disrupted between many villagers due to floodwaters on the road. Many areas look like a pond with rainwater becoming stagnant. The continuous rains have also resulted in power cuts and people are facing a shortage of drinking water.

Apart from Hyderabad, heavy rains have also lashed many parts of Telangana including Nirmal, Adilabad, Kamareddy, Sangareddy, Medak, Rangareddy, Nagarkurnool, Jagittala, Khammam, Peddapalli, Warangal Urban, Warangal Rural, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mahabubabad, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Mahabubnagar, Vikarabad, Karimnagar and Rajanna Sirisilla. According to the weather department, few places in the northeastern and eastern Telangana districts are likely to receive heavy rains with the next few days.

Heavy rains across the Nizamabad district have inundated the low-lying areas. Especially in the rural constituencies of Sirikonda, Dharpalli and Indalwai mandals as brooks are overflowing. Crops have been submerged due to overflowing water in the Jakran Palli Mandal. Nearly 50 acres of cropland is submerged in floodwaters near the Hannajipet pond.

The incessant rains have been a matter of concern for the farmers as they fear that their crops will get destroyed within a week of sowing. The floodwater is also approaching the paddy fields with heavy rains. The harvest stored in cold storage has started rotting due to excessive moisture. Authorities stated that the flood water has even reached near the Seethamma idol in Sita Wagu.

The water level at the Godavari river is continuously rising at Bhadrachalam. At present, the water level of Godavari has reached 14.4 feet. Authorities said that the water level is likely to rise further due to floods coming from the upper reaches. At a bigger level, the production of coal has also been disrupted at several sites which is causing a loss of crores of rupees.

Coal production at Koyagudem surface mines in Bhadradri's Kottagudem district has come to a standstill due to heavy rains. 58,000 cubic meters of soil extraction work has been interrupted. Over 40,000 cubic meters of overburden works have been halted and 10,000 tonnes of coal production was damaged.

Coal production at three surface mines in the Ramagundam region of Peddapalli district has also been interrupted. The Ramagundam surface mines have disrupted coal production of about 70,000 tonnes per day. Rainwater has reached the Singareni surface mines. Authorities are trying to prevent the machines from submerging into floodwaters. They have also stopped the dumpers to avoid further damage.

In Botha constituency of Adilabad district, brooks are overflowing with heavy rains and Pocharla Falls is releasing a huge amount of water in the inland areas of the tribal villages in the Sirikonda and Bazarhatnur zones. Due to the flooding of the canals, people in the area are not allowed to move outside.
