Warangal:In a landmark judgment, the Warangal Court on Thursday awarded death sentence to a man for raping and murdering a nine-month-old infant, within 50 days of the incident coming to light.
The 28-year old convict, named Praveen, was from the same locality as the deceased and used to work in a hotel.
Lawyers express happiness over the judgment Investigation by the police showed that he raped and murdered the baby after taking her (who was in sleep) away from her mother on the night of June 18.
A fast-tracked investigation was conducted and a charge sheet was filed within 20 days of the incident.
The court completed trial within 50 days, as the accused confessed to his crime. Further, the Warangal Bar Association had decided not to represent the rape accused.
Expressing happiness over the judgment, Warangal Bar Association Joint Secretary TC Sujatha said, "The advocate community is really happy that the judgment was pronounced within a short duration. This was possible only because the Warangal police investigated the case in a proper way."
"A strong chargesheet was filed. Everything, right from the scientific evidence to the oral evidence was against the accused," she added.
Reacting to the judgment, TRS Working President KT Rama Rao tweeted, "Death penalty verdict by court of law for the animal who molested a child in Warangal is a welcome judgement. We need more stringent laws and fast track courts to take these horrendous offenders off our streets. My compliments to the advocates who fought hard"
Warangal had witnessed massive protests since the incident came to light on June 19.
