Indian researchers develop anti-Covid 'mushroom diet'

Efforts are on to bring to the markets an anti-viral food supplement comprising mushrooms, which CCMB, an Indian research organisation believes can help in combating COVID-19. Mushrooms are rich in antioxidants, and its beta-glucans have anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties.

Hyderabad (Telangana): The Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in Hyderabad has successfully conducted an experiment on an anti-viral diet comprising mushrooms.

The CCMB will reportedly prepare the anti-viral food supplement made from mushrooms. Clone Deals, a subsidiary of Atal Incubation, conducted the joint research along with CCMB.

Mushrooms are rich in antioxidants, and its beta-glucans have anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties.

It was in the bid towards making coronavirus prevention drugs that scientists experimented with developing a food supplement as an immediate antidote.

Meanwhile, leading pharmaceutical food product company Ambrosia has teamed up with food farm to make the supplement available. The supplement will be available in liquid form and will comprise of cordyceps, curcumin, and mushrooms.

CCMB Director Rakesh Mishra believes that the supplement can be effective in combating Covid-19. The supplement is expected to hit the markets early next year.

When used with the turmeric mixture, mushrooms are expected to play a key role in combating coronavirus, as it helps in boosting immunity as an antioxidant, and also improves the functioning of the lungs.

Meanwhile, AIIMS is already working on the concept in its clinical trials. Experiments are currently underway on its performance at the Nagpur, Bhopal, and Navi Mumbai centres of AIIMS.
