Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu): In a noble initiative, youth from a village in Tamil Nadu's Coimbatore district have been supplying essentials to migrant workers stranded due to the lockdown.

Youngsters from the Kaniyur Panchayat have been supplying surplus rice, pulses, sugar and palm oil bought from ration outlets to the migrant workers who are currently stranded in the village.

Many workers from souther districts come for work to the village

"Since the place has plenty of power looms, a large number of workers from the southern districts stay and work here. Now, they are unable to return to their hometowns as a result of restrictions under Section 144," a youth said.

"So we have bought all the essential materials required for them from the ration outlets and have handed them over," the youth added.

Ever since the nationwide lockdown was enforced in view of the COVID-19 pandemic, all transportation has been shut down.

As a result, many migrants have been stuck at their location of work, and have been facing trouble due to the lack of income.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu is expected to take a decision on lockdown extension based on Centre's move on the matter.
