Two die of asphyxiation while digging tunnel for treasure in TN

Raghupathi (47) and Nirmal Ganapathy (17) died due to asphyxiation while digging a tunnel in the pursuit of hidden treasure. Two others who inhaled poisonous gas have been admitted to Nellai Government Medical College Hospital.

Tuticorin:In a tragic incident, two people died due to asphyxiation while hunting for buried treasure in Nazareth. The deceased have been identified as Raghupathi (47) and Nirmal Ganapathy (17).

Sivamalai (40) and Sivavelan (37), brothers, have been digging a 40-feet deep pit over the past six months believing that there is a treasure in the backyard of their house in Thiruvalluvar colony.

They were also involved in the construction of a seven-foot side tunnel. Manikandan's son Ganapathy and Alvarthirunagari Alamarathan's son Raghupathi from Sathankulam Pannampara accompanied them. It is said that all four of them inhaled poisonous gas.

Sivavelan's wife Rupa fainted while she brought water for them. The incident came to light as neighbours tried to rescue an unconscious Rupa.

On being informed, Sathankulam Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Godwin Jegathish Kumar, Nazareth Inspector Vijayalakshmi and Auvaikundam Fire Station Officer Muthukumar immediately rushed to the spot and initiated rescue operations.

Raghupathi and Nirmal Ganapathy died on the spot. Sivavelan and Sivamalai have been admitted to Nellai Government Medical College Hospital.
