TN taking necessary steps to provide relief to flood-victims in Nilgiris, says CM

CM Palaniswami on Monday termed the DMK chief Stalin's visit to the flood-hit Nilgiris as a publicity stunt. The Tamil Nadu government is currently providing relief to the flood victims of the district.

Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu government is providing necessary relief to the rain-hit people of Nilgiris district, Chief Minister K Palaniswami said on Monday.

Hitting out at DMK chief M K Stalin, the chief minister said he visited the district only for 'publicity sake'.

"He (Stalin) visited the area only for publicity sake, that too the day after the revenue minister visited the affected areas for assessing the situation," he said.

"Unlike him, the government will take all measures and provide relief to the people and compensate for their losses. Relief funds can be sought from the Centre only after proper assessment of the losses," Palaniswami said.

Stating that necessary safety measures were taken in the district, he said steps were taken to conserve water without wasting it.

He said deputy chief minister O. Panneerselvam, who accompanied him, will proceed to Nilgiris district to study the situation and comfort affected people tomorrow.

"The DMK alliance has done no good (to the people)," he alleged, adding that the State government was supporting the good schemes of the Centre.

Palaniswami said the water would be released from the Mettur Dam Tuesday for irrigation in delta districts, following huge inflows.

Accusing the Tamil Nadu government of not taking any preventive measures to tackle the impact of rains and floods, Stalin had demanded that the district be declared a natural disaster-prone district.
