Tamil Nadu police deploy drones to monitor lock down

Beginning today, the Tamil Nadu Police have deployed drones to monitor the lockdown in Chennai, Kanyakumari, and Erode districts. Cops say the drones will help them to identify violators and book them with solid evidence.

Chennai (Tamil Nadu): With large-scale monitoring of the lockdown proving to be an uphill task, the Tamil Nadu police have decided to deploy drones in Chennai, Kanyakumari, and Erode districts from Friday for heightened surveillance.

The drones will fly around the main roads in the district, places which cannot be accessed by police, and checkposts along inter-state borders.

Since community spreading can also be caused by persons coming in from neighbouring states, security has been strengthened along Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh borders to prevent people from entering Tamil Nadu. Accordingly, the method will be implemented in the districts of Kanyakumari and Erode, which border Kerala and Karnataka respectively.

The police believe that with the help of drones, outsiders can be easily identified, and people from the state can also be prevented from making similar mistakes.

Police claim that no one can escape from the drones' eagle vision, and that people will think twice before stepping out of their homes. The Kanyakumari district police superintendent said, "Section 144 ban has been in effect in the district since 6 pm on March 24. Defying this, if people roam about unnecessarily, they will definitely be booked."

"We plan to monitor Kanyakumari district by drone from today onwards. Accordingly, the most important areas will be monitored. The lockdown orders seem being violated in coastal villages. So the coastal areas comprising Muttam, Chinamamuttam, Thengaipattinam and Kulachal are also to be monitored by drones," he added.

In the next phase, the Kerala border areas will be monitored with the help of drones, making it easier for the police to take action on violators on the basis of solid evidence.

Similarly, Chennai Municipal Commissioner Prakash has also begun monitoring through drones throughout the city. The drones are also being used to spray disinfectants across the city.
