Tamil Nadu: 40-yr-old woman commits suicide in quarantine ward

A 40-year-old woman identified as Mariammal from Kondalampatti committed suicide after she was isolated in a quarantine ward at a Women's College in Salem's Gorimedu. Her body was found hanging from the ceiling of the ward. Her relatives believe that laxity in district administration forced her to take the extreme step.

Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu): A 40-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide on Monday after she was isolated in a quarantine ward at a Women's College in Salem's Gorimedu which has been turned into a coronavirus care centre.

The deceased identified as Mariammal from Kondalampatti was put on quarantine from June 30 after one of her relatives tested positive for COVID-19, the police said.

She had tested negative for the infection and was about to be discharged, but she was found hanging from the ceiling in the ward, they said.

Her body has been sent for a postmortem to Salem government hospital and police are investigating the cause behind her suicide.

Few of her relatives rallied in front of the Women’s College and blocked the road to stop the movement of the traffic.

They alleged that the negligence by the district administration forced her to take the extreme step.
