SIT arrests two in connection with terror threat in TN

The SIT has arrested two people in connection with a possible terror threat in the state of Tamil Nadu. Reports suggested that six members of the terror outfit LeT have infiltrated the state by sea from Sri Lanka and moved to different cities, including Coimbatore, according to the police.

Coimbatore: Two people have been arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) after reports emerged about possible inflitrators from LeT outfit, planning to carry out a terror attack in Tamil Nadu, during the upcoming of Ganesh Chaturthi festival.

A red alert was sounded as the city police received information regarding six terrorists infiltrating into Tamil Nadu, by sea.

According to police, both the accused were in contact with Kadar Raheem, who was arrested by Kerala police two days before for having LeT terror links.

Security has been stepped up at many places, including airports, railway stations, bus stands and places of worship across the state.

An alert has also been issued, especially in coastal districts, to prevent any further possible intrusion.

"We have also informed the army and air force to alert their defences. We have also put vehicle checking points all over the city. As of now, a general red alert is maintained. There is no need to worry and panic," Sumeet Saran, Coimbatore Police Commissioner, said.

The police have deployed 10 Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) at strategic locations as a precautionary measure, and almost 2,000 police personnel have been deployed for securing the city.
