The Department of Highways, however, made them vacate the place a few years ago for the construction of a national highway connecting Nagapattinam, assuring them an alternate location.

Accordingly, they were given a place in the middle of Karuvelam trees in Amma Nagar and forced to live there with their families without electricity.

Commenting on this, Madhavi, a young woman from the area, said, “Previously, we were residing near Bharath college. We moved to Amma Nagar 10 years ago. We had filed various petitions over the years requesting for electricity but, no action has been taken yet. We have been brought to the streets by the Government. Hence, we have planned to handover our Voter IDs and Aadhar IDs at the District Collectorate.”

Akila, a resident of the area, said, “There has been no electricity since the day we moved to Amma Nagar from Thengal. We find it very difficult to survive with children as there are a lot of snakes in the area. We need electricity as there are a lot of students here.”

“It’s been 10 years since we moved to Amma Nagar but, the district officials have not taken any step to provide electricity till today. Many ministers visited us after the Gaja cyclone hit, but no action has been taken. We struggle to survive here with children without electricity,” said Veerasamy, a senior citizen of Amma Nagar.
