Madras HC orders removal of statues from public places

"Political parties, religious, caste and linguistic organizations set up leaders statues of their choice. Leaders who have sacrificed their lives for society should not be caste-identified at any point."

Chennai: The Madras High Court on Thursday has ordered to remove statues in public places including highways across Tamil Nadu within three months .

“The Government of Tamil Nadu should lay down comprehensive rules regarding the granting of permission to erect statues and structures in a manner that does not infringe on the rights of the public," Judge S.M. Subramaniam said.

"Political parties, religious, caste and linguistic organizations set up leaders statues of their choice. Leaders who have sacrificed their lives for society should not be caste-identified at any point.

In this case, the statues in public places, including highways, must be removed within three months," he added.

In addition, the placing of idols on public places and roads must be brought under control, otherwise, the current fears in the minds of the people will not go away."
