Madurai (Tamil Nadu): Locals in the Meenatchipuram area near Sellur in the Ramanathapuram district celebrated the 102nd birthday of a banyan tree in the locality. The trees have been a part of their lives since childhood.

More than seven banyan trees were grown in the area, which became extinct over time without being properly maintained. Now, only one tree is left which has stood majestically over the centuries.

One of the organisers, Abu Bakar, says, "We celebrate this festival with the public every year to make future generations aware of the need for trees and to protect the native species of trees."

"Festivals like this can initiate a positive change," he added.
