Elephant with torn ear spotted in Tamil Nadu

Forest officials in Tamil Nadu's Nilgiris found a 40-year-old male elephant in a severely injured state. The elephant was profusely bleeding from its left ear which was partially ripped off.

Nilgiris (Tamil Nadu): A 40-year-old male elephant was found in a badly-injured state near Masinagudi in Tamil Nadu's Nilgiris district.

According to reports, forest officials saw the elephant profusely bleeding from one of its ears. Upon inspection, they found that a part of its left ear had ripped off.

"The forest department medical team initially gave medicine through food to the injured elephant. After getting approval from higher authorities, the elephant would be injected with anaesthetic and will be given further treatment as soon as possible," an official said.

"Elephants have a habit of entering residential areas. Unknown persons usually attack and badly injure the elephant before managing to escape. We then form a team to find the attackers," the official added.

Around two months earlier, a male elephant was found with a severe back injury in the Nilgiris. The wound was then medically treated a month later with the help of Kumki (trained) elephants.
