Free travel for transgenders in TN govt-run buses likely

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Saturday said his government is considering free bus travel for transgender people. He said a decision in this regard will be taken soon.

Chennai:Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Saturday said his government is considering free bus travel for transgender people.

Hours after taking the oath, Stalin rolled out free travel for women in state-run buses. As per the order, the government has allocated a sum of Rs 1,200 crore towards a subsidy for this purpose.

Following this, various parties demanded that the government extends this facility to transgender people as well. Requesting the same, a journalist posted a tweet by tagging Stalin. The newly-inducted Chief Minister replied, "It has been the practice of the DMK government since time immemorial to think of transgender life in conjunction with women's welfare and rights".

He said a final decision in this regard will be taken soon.
