Former MP fined for assaulting policeman in Tamil Nadu's Salem

Former DMK lawmaker K Arjunan was fined a sum of Rs 20,000 on Tuesday for assaulting a policeman on duty at a toll plaza on the Salem-Bengaluru National Highway near Karuppur in Tamil Nadu's Salem.

Salem: Former Dharmapuri MP and DMK member K Arjunan was asked to pay a fine of Rs. 20,000 on Tuesday for abusing and assaulting an on-duty policeman near Salem in Tamil Nadu.

The former MP was caught on camera assaulting a policeman on duty at a toll plaza on the Salem-Bengaluru National Highway near Karuppur in Salem. In the video of the incident which went viral, the police officer was also seen slapping the former MP.

The incident took place when former Dharmapuri MP, K Arjunan was returning to Salem city from his farm. Arjunan started arguing with the cops when they asked him to produce e-pass as he was entering the city at the toll plaza. He told the police that he did not carry any ID card and that he was a former MP and a resident of Salem.

Karuppur police had registered a complaint against Arjunan under sections 294 and 353 of IPC for abusing and stopping a government official from discharging duty. Seeking anticipatory bail, Arjunan filed a petition, after which he was ordered by the District Magistrate to pay a fine of Rs, 20,000 to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund.

Arjunan was an MP from Dharmapuri when he was in the DMK, an MLA from Tharamangalam in Salem district when he was in the AIADMK (J) and an MLA from Veerapandi when he was in the AIADMK.
