HC asks TN govt to reconsider plan to convert Jayalalithaa's residence into memorial

The Chennai High Court has directed the Edappadi K. Palaniswami led government to 'reconsider' the plan of converting late CM J. Jayalalithaa's residence into a memorial.

Chennai:The Chennai High Court has ordered the state government to reconsider the plan of converting late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa's residence into a memorial.

Pugazenthi, Janakiraman who were members of ADMK filed a case in the High Court seeking appointment of an administrator to manage the properties of Jaya worth Rs. 913 crores.

However, objecting to the acquisition of Veda Nilayam by the government, Jayayalalithaa's niece J. Deepa had filed a case in the Madras High Court.

The income tax department informed the court that they had frozen some of Jaya's properties such as Veda residence and other properties in Bengaluru as Rs 40 crores to recover the outstanding income tax.

After all the arguments were put forth, the judges comprising of Kirubakaran and Abdulkutus adjourned the hearing previous August without mentioning the date. In this case, the judges gave the verdict of the property case via video conferencing.

What's the verdict says:

  • The Chennai HC has ordered the Govt to reconsider the plan of converting Veda lllam into a memorial home.
  • Part of Veda Illam can be converted into Memorial home and the remains have to be converted into Official Chief Minister's residence.
  • The HC also has recommended forming a foundation in part of Jayalalithaa's property.
  • The cases of Pugazenthi and Janakiraman to appoint an administrator to manage the properties was dismissed.
  • Deepa and Deepak, the children of Jaya's brother have rights in the property of the late CM. Deepa and Deepak are declared as second-level heirs to the property of Jayalalithaa.
  • The judges have ordered to file a report based on this recommendation within 8 weeks.

Jayalalithaa died in December 2016 after prolonged illness.
